ABOUT IT:
One night on my way home—as a teenager of perhaps sixteen—I impulsively veered off the path, plunged into a cornfield, and broke into a run. The deafening rustling of the leaves pleasantly drowned out my bewildered thoughts, until suddenly my adrenaline levels—and consequently my fear—skyrocketed as, to my right, a group of horses felt compelled to gallop alongside me at full speed. Initially, sheer panic took over, and I flew through the field at an even greater pace; then the horses’ gallop began to subside—they had presumably reached the perimeter fence. When I emerged from the cornfield a short while later, I realized just how uniquely surreal—and even exhilarating—that experience had been.
